Name
Panel discussion: Pollution, wreck removal & environmental liabilities – implications for H&M and P&I markets
Description

Environmental incidents and wreck removal operations are becoming increasingly severe, complex and costly, creating major exposures across both hull and machinery and P&I liability lines. This session examines the latest developments in marine pollution and wreck removal, including stricter environmental regulation, growing intervention by coastal states and rising expectations for rapid and comprehensive response following casualties.

Panellists will explore how pollution events and wreck removal claims generate significant H&M exposures such as hull damage, machinery failure, cargo contamination and constructive total losses as well as major P&I liabilities including environmental cleanup costs, third-party damage, fines, wreck removal obligations and reputational impacts. The session will also address evolving liability frameworks under international conventions and domestic regimes, the impact on the International Group pool and the challenge of managing high-severity, low-frequency losses.
